Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan, popularly known as M.S. Swaminathan, is an eminent Indian agricultural scientist and geneticist who is often referred to as the "Father of the Green Revolution in India." He was born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India.

Swaminathan completed his education in agricultural sciences from the University of Cambridge and obtained a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. He returned to India and began his career as a geneticist at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi.

During his tenure at IARI, Swaminathan played a crucial role in introducing high-yielding varieties of wheat, rice, and other crops in India. His efforts, along with those of other scientists, helped transform India from a food-deficient nation to a self-sufficient one, significantly increasing agricultural productivity and addressing food security issues.

He served as the Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and as the Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education in the Government of India.
